Medium Spice
Emotional tension with a few scenes
I categorize a book as medium spice when the story focuses heavily on the plot and emotional connection, but it still includes a few descriptive intimate scenes. Usually, the tension builds for a while before anything physical happens. You get the heat, but it does not take over the entire narrative.
The chemistry is built through meaningful glances and verbal tension.
Intimate scenes are present but they are not the primary focus of every chapter.

High Spice
Frequent steam and detailed descriptions
This is where things start to get much more frequent. In these books, the physical attraction is a driving force of the relationship. You can expect multiple scenes that are described in detail, and the characters often spend a significant amount of time exploring their attraction to one another.
There is a high frequency of intimate moments throughout the book.
The descriptions are much more vivid and leave little to the imagination.
Plot and spice are balanced almost equally to keep you hooked.

Very High Spice
Intense focus on physical connection
If you are looking for a story that is almost entirely driven by physical intensity, this is your level. These books often feature multiple partners, public settings, or very dominant dynamics. I use this rating when the heat is a constant presence that rarely lets up from start to finish.
The physical relationship is often the main way the characters communicate.
Scenes are very long, detailed, and happen in almost every chapter.
This level often introduces more adventurous elements and power play.

Extreme / Explicit
Kink, dark themes, and no boundaries
This is the top of my scale and it is reserved for the darkest, most intense content I review. This level often includes heavy kink, taboo elements, and situations that are meant to push your limits. I always include specific content warnings for these because they are not for the faint of heart.
The content is very explicit and includes dark themes that may be triggering.
It often features extreme power dynamics or non-traditional relationships.
I recommend these only if you are very comfortable with the dark side of the genre.

Does a high spice level mean the plot is weak?

Is a slow burn book always low spice?
A slow burn just means it takes a long time for the characters to get together. A book can be a slow burn but still end up being very high spice once the tension finally breaks.
